South Africa’s entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor, director and gospel musician Seputla Sebogodi, who died on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, following complications related to diabetes. He was 63.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement released through his talent agency, Artist Connection, and later shared by industry platform Actor Spaces.
“The immediate family of Seputla Sebogodi confirms, with profound sadness, his passing on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes,” the family said. “The family kindly requests privacy as they mourn this immense loss and navigate this difficult time together.”
A remarkable career that shaped South African entertainment
With a career spanning more than four decades, Sebogodi established himself as one of South Africa’s most respected and recognisable performers.
He became a household name through his portrayal of the ruthless Kenneth Mashaba on the iconic SABC soap opera Generations, a role that remains one of the most memorable in South African television history. He later appeared in Rhythm City and most recently played Kgopolo in e.tv’s Scandal!.
His screen credits also include Suburban Bliss, Bophelo Ke Semphekgo, where he made his acting breakthrough in the early 1990s as the charismatic but womanising Nkwesheng, as well as Redemption and Critical Assignment.

Away from television, Sebogodi built an equally distinguished career on stage. He earned widespread acclaim for performances in productions including Big Dada, Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial, Once a Pirate and Mooi Street Moves.

Just a week before his death, he presented his latest theatrical production, Black Moon, at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. The production explored themes of pain, identity, religion and South Africa’s complex history, reflecting the bold and thought-provoking storytelling that became synonymous with his work.
Paying tribute, his family described him as a towering figure in South African arts and culture.
“Seputla Sebogodi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in South African theatre and television. He will be remembered for his memorable performances in Generations, Suburban Bliss, Bophelo Ke Semphego, Redemption, and most recently Scandal!, as well as his acclaimed theatre work in productions including Big Dada, Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial, Once a Pirate, and Mooi Street Moves, among many others.”
The family added: “His legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work and the many lives he touched.”

News of Sebogodi’s death triggered an outpouring of grief from across the country’s entertainment industry, with fellow actors, directors, production companies and fans paying tribute to a man many described as a giant of South African storytelling.
Actor Spaces said his contribution to the arts would continue to inspire generations.

Many colleagues also remembered Sebogodi as a generous mentor who invested in young performers throughout his career, describing him as a teacher, pioneer and role model whose influence extended far beyond the screen and stage.

Sebogodi’s death comes only weeks after he publicly dismissed rumours that he had fallen on hard times.
The speculation began after a photograph of the veteran actor circulated widely on social media, prompting concern among fans. Sebogodi later clarified that the image had been taken on a film set and rejected claims that it reflected his personal circumstances or declining health.
