Just a month after hosting Africa’s premier event, the MTN Bushfire Festival, the country is gearing up once again for the much-anticipated Standard Bank Luju Food and Lifestyle Festival, a dazzling celebration blending fashion, gourmet cuisine, soulful music, and timeless African elegance.

Set to take place from August 1 to August 2, 2025, the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival is an annual two-day extravaganza that showcases the best of culinary artistry, cutting-edge fashion, fine music, and wholesome entertainment.

Fashion takes center stage at the Luju Festival

Rooted in the inspiring theme, “A Return to the African Future,” Luju honours the sophistication and rich heritage of African culture, cuisine, and creative design.

Since its inception in 2018, the festival has grown into a family-friendly event that delights attendees with gourmet dishes crafted by celebrity chefs, fashion shows featuring visionary designers, premium wine and whiskey tastings, and vibrant performances that celebrate Africa’s afro-futuristic spirit.

Fashion at the Forefront: Spotlight on African Creativity

Simon Dawson, Communications Officer for House on Fire, the festival’s proud organiser describes Luju as Eswatini’s “not-to-be-missed fashion event of the year.” He highlights the Luju Fashion Show on the Mastercard Stage, where talented designers from Eswatini and the wider region present their innovative and culturally rich collections through dynamic runway storytelling.

“The Luju fashion program not only showcases stunning designs but actively supports local fashion entrepreneurs through mentorship, trade linkages, technical assistance, and media exposure,” Dawson explains.

African cuisine brings a different element to things

“It fosters cultural exchange among regional designers, using fashion as a powerful medium to tell African stories and promote environmental sustainability in production and consumption.”

Ahead of the main festival, the Standard Bank Luju Fashion Indaba brings together industry stakeholders for a vital conference focused on the business of fashion.

This forum addresses the current challenges facing Eswatini’s fashion sector and explores opportunities for growth.

“The Indaba is a platform for dialogue among designers, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, government bodies, NGOs, and academics,” Dawson says.

“Together, they work to build a sustainable value chain that prioritizes responsible production and consumption, ensuring the future of African fashion is both vibrant and eco-conscious.”

This Year’s Theme: Threads of Time – African Textiles Past, Present & Future

The 2025 festival embraces the theme “Threads of Time,” which invites attendees to journey through the rich history and evolution of African textiles and adornment.

This theme celebrates the cultural wisdom woven into traditional fabrics and explores how these timeless materials continue to inspire contemporary fashion.

By delving into Africa’s textile heritage and leveraging natural resources, the festival encourages a sustainable fashion future, one that honours ancestral craftsmanship while innovating for modern needs.
