Brazilian National Nabbed in R8.7 Million Cocaine Bust at OR Tambo

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has dealt another significant blow to transnational drug syndicates after intercepting a Brazilian national at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) with cocaine valued at R8.7 million.
The arrest, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, followed an intelligence-driven operation targeting the lucrative Brazil-to-South Africa drug corridor.
The 26-year-old suspect was apprehended shortly after landing on a flight from Brazil. Acting on specific intelligence, SAPS officers conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s luggage, discovering multiple blocks of cocaine wrapped and concealed within the bags.

SAPS National Spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, confirmed that the suspect is facing charges of drug trafficking and is scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

This latest bust follows a string of high-profile successes at South Africa’s largest port of entry, as authorities intensify their crackdown on “drug mules” and organised crime.
- The China-Bound Syndicate (March 2026): Just weeks prior, SAPS and the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) intercepted five South African women attempting to smuggle drugs worth over R5 million. The group was en route to China via Dubai, with narcotics concealed in their sneakers, underwear, and internal cavities.
- The Brazil Connection (February 2025): Earlier operations saw the arrest of two South African nationals who arrived on separate flights from Brazil, carrying cocaine worth R7.5 million.
- Ingestion Tactics: In a separate incident, a Brazilian man and a South African woman were hospitalised after medical scans revealed they had ingested dozens of cocaine “bullets” to evade detection.
The frequency of these arrests underscores OR Tambo’s position as a critical node in international smuggling routes. According to recent SAPS crime statistics, drug-related arrests remain a top priority, with over 31,000 suspects apprehended for drug possession and dealing in the last quarter alone.

“The interception of drug traffickers has gone a long way in disrupting the supply of illicit drugs and strengthening the fight against organised crime,” said Brigadier Mathe.
Authorities have warned that surveillance at all major airports has been heightened, utilising improved intelligence sharing and advanced scanning technology to detect increasingly sophisticated concealment methods.
