CAF CHAN 2024: A Rising Pillar in African Football’s Growth and Evolution

Unlike other major international competitions, CHAN is exclusively reserved for players who compete in their domestic leagues.

The TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) has evolved into a vital engine for the development of African football, serving as a unique showcase for homegrown talent and helping reshape the continent’s footballing landscape.

Unlike other major international competitions, CHAN is exclusively reserved for players who compete in their domestic leagues. This format makes it a distinctive platform, spotlighting local players who often remain outside the global limelight, yet form the backbone of African football.

As CAF gears up for the 8th edition of the tournament — set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from 2–30 August 2025 — the significance of CHAN has never been more pronounced.

The 2025 tournament will not only be historic for being the first to be jointly hosted by three countries, but also for its amplified reach, increased prize money, and strategic role in the African football ecosystem.

Championing Local Talent, Driving Continental Progress

The growth of CHAN aligns with the broader vision of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, who has emphasized a commitment to making African football globally competitive and economically self-sustaining.

The 2022 edition held in Algeria marked a pivotal moment in the competition’s trajectory. With record-breaking broadcast reach, vibrant crowd attendance, and high-quality matches, it highlighted the growing strength of domestic leagues across Africa. Stadiums were filled with energy, and millions of viewers across the continent tuned in — validating the competition’s importance and appeal.

Bigger Stakes, Greater Incentives

CAF has responded to this momentum by increasing the prize money by 60%, with the tournament champions now set to receive USD 2 million. This significant increase is not just about financial gain; it’s a statement about the tournament’s rising prestige and its role in motivating federations and players to prioritise CHAN.
