POLOKWANE – Orlando Pirates vice-captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi bowed out in style on Saturday, helping the Buccaneers lift the Carling Knockout Cup in their 1–0 win over Marumo Gallants at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The final was his last outing in Pirates colours before he heads to Major League Soccer, where he will join Chicago Fire after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January.

Speaking after the match, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou said he understood exactly what Mbokazi was going through as he prepares for the next phase of his career. The Moroccan coach reflected on his own journey, saying he faced a similar crossroads as a young defender in France.

“I was in his position when I was 22 years old at Nancy, my former club,” Ouaddou said. “I spent four years developing there, then played two seasons in the first division. After that, I had the opportunity to go to the Premier League with Fulham. It’s the evolution of a football career. I just want to wish him good luck. All the best to him.”

Ouaddou revealed that he challenged Mbokazi before the final.

“I told him before the game: put the team in a good position on the log and win the trophy. Then nobody can question you because you’ve done your job. And the guy did his job.”

The coach also urged Mbokazi to stay grounded and remember the journey that shaped him.

“He’s going to the US and we hope he continues to grow and develop,” Ouaddou said. “But he must never forget Orlando Pirates. Never forget the club that made you, and never forget your national team. Going to the US doesn’t mean you stop improving. Think of Orlando Pirates, think of your nation. It’s very important.”

Mbokazi will link up with the Chicago Fire after the AFCON, where he is expected to be part of the Bafana Bafana squad.
