Lando Norris seals F1 world title after tense Abu Dhabi finale

The 25-year-old sealed the championship by just two points, edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in one of the closest finishes.

JOHANNESBURG – McLaren’s Lando Norris has been crowned Formula One world champion for the first time, clinching the title after a nerve-filled Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that kept fans on edge until the final lap.

The 25-year-old sealed the championship by just two points, edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in one of the closest finishes in recent seasons. Norris secured third place in Sunday’s finale, enough to take the crown thanks to his victory at the previous round and teammate Oscar Piastri’s strong second-place finish.

Piastri ends the season 13 points behind Norris, completing a remarkable year for McLaren, whose late-season consistency turned the championship fight on its head.

A race won through grit, not comfort

Norris started from second on the grid, but the pressure intensified almost immediately. He slipped to third on the opening lap after Piastri swept around the outside of turn nine with a bold move that startled even the McLaren pit wall.

From that moment, Norris was forced into a defensive drive, managing tyre wear, race pace and the constant threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who stalked him for most of the afternoon.

There was also a worrying moment mid-race when Norris came under investigation by race stewards after running wide while duelling with Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese driver had swerved across the straight in an unsafe defence, forcing both cars off-line.

Stewards reviewed the footage and ruled Tsunoda at fault, giving him a five-second penalty and clearing Norris, a decision that ultimately kept the McLaren driver’s title bid alive.

Steady hands in a high-stakes finish

With the race settling into rhythm, Piastri took over the lead and held it until his late pit stop with 16 laps remaining. Norris had pitted one lap earlier for a fresh set of tyres, staying third but maintaining enough pace to keep Leclerc at bay.

The Ferrari driver pushed hard in the closing laps, closing the gap but never close enough to launch a decisive attack. A pass would have swung the championship to Verstappen, but Norris kept his composure and held firm.

When the chequered flag waved, relief washed over the McLaren garage. After years of promise, near misses and heartbreak, Norris had finally completed his rise to the top.

Britain’s new champion

His triumph makes him Britain’s 11th Formula One world champion, joining a lineage that includes Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Norris said: “I’ve not cried in a while! I didn’t think I would cry, but I did! It’s a long journey. First of all, I want to say a big thanks to my guys, everyone at McLaren, my parents – my mum, my dad – they are the ones who have supported me since the beginning. It feels amazing. I now know what Max feels like a little bit! I want to congratulate Max and Oscar, my two biggest competitors the whole season. It’s been a pleasure to race against both of them. It’s been an honour, I’ve learned a lot from both.”

Norris added that the championship has been a long time coming.

“It’s been a long journey with me and McLaren. I’ve been with them for nine years. We have been through plenty of crazy, difficult times and crazy good times. For me to give something back to them, I feel like I did my part with the team this year. I’m very proud of myself for that but even more proud of everyone I hopefully made cry.”

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown, speaking to Sky Sports F1, said he was proud of the team and the two drivers.

“We let them race until the end. Most people thought that would be impossible to pull off. It’s a dream racing with these two guys. Oscar and Lando have been awesome all year. It hasn’t been easy. This Max guy is quite hard to beat, so it’s quite the accomplishment. So well deserved by everyone. I can’t wait to get back to the factory and celebrate with the entire team,” Brown said.

For McLaren, it marks the team’s biggest achievement in more than a decade, capping a season in which their young driver pairing has emerged as one of the strongest on the grid. The team also won the constructors’ championship, making them double world champions.

Norris’s championship mirrors the story of the season: perseverance, strategic brilliance, and a touch of audacity when it mattered most. And on a tense night in Abu Dhabi, he proved he could carry those qualities all the way to the title.
