Magnitude 6 Earthquake Strikes Guatemala, Shallow Depth Raises Concerns

The epicentre was located near El Adelanto in the Jutiapa department, southeast of Guatemala City, with the quake registered at 21:25 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Guatemala City, Guatemala — A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Guatemala on the evening of July 29, 2025, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres, which often contributes to stronger ground shaking and potential damage.

The epicentre was located near El Adelanto in the Jutiapa department, southeast of Guatemala City, with the quake registered at 21:25 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

The event was followed about 17 minutes later by a magnitude 4.8 aftershock near Comapa, also in Jutiapa, indicating ongoing seismic activity in the region.

Guatemala’s Seismic Risk

Guatemala is situated in a highly seismically active area known as the Middle America Trench, where the Cocos Plate subducts beneath the Caribbean and North American plates.

The nation frequently experiences earthquakes, including damaging events in recent years, such as a 5.7 magnitude quake in July 2025 that caused at least seven deaths and injuries in multiple departments.

The 6.0 magnitude tremor adds to the ongoing seismic risk faced by communities, many of which still bear vulnerable infrastructures. The region’s history reveals repeated incidents of earthquakes triggering landslides and structural collapses, which are exacerbated by local construction practices and geography.

Impact and Response

According to early reports, no detailed assessments have been released regarding the injuries or extensive damage caused by the July 29 quake.

However, residents reported noticeable shaking across areas near the epicentre, raising concerns among vulnerable populations still recovering from previous seismic events earlier this summer.

Damage from the Earthquake

Guatemala’s National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) typically monitors such events closely, issuing alerts and coordinating emergency response efforts to mitigate damage and assist affected communities.

Seismic Activity Trends and Precautionary Measures

Following the recent swarm of earthquakes starting earlier in July 2025, with more than a thousand quakes recorded, the region remains on high alert for aftershocks and subsequent tremors.

Authorities advise residents to adhere to safety procedures, including preparedness for evacuation and structural inspections.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences and other global seismology agencies continue to track seismic movementsin the area to provide timely warnings and scientific data to support disaster management.

Guatemala’s susceptibility to earthquakes underscores the importance of strengthening building codes, emergency preparedness, and community resilience efforts. As the country rebuilds and recovers from previous quakes, the recent magnitude 6 event serves as a reminder of the persistent natural hazards faced by millions.

Residents, local authorities, and international partners remain engaged in enhancing strategies to protect lives and livelihoods in Guatemala’s seismically active zones.
