Pirates Make History as Fifth Straight MTN8 Final Beckons After Sekhukhune Rout

JOHANNESBURG – Orlando Pirates have made MTN8 history.

The Buccaneers dismantled Sekhukhune United 3-0 at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory and book their place in the competition’s final for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year.

No club has previously managed such a run in the MTN8.

But the significance of the achievement goes beyond the record. Pirates’ latest victory once again highlighted their growing mastery of knockout football, built not around individual moments of brilliance but on patience, defensive discipline and the ability to finish off opponents when opportunities arrive.

Against Sekhukhune, that formula worked to perfection.

Pirates Turn the Screw

Sekhukhune entered the second leg needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first meeting and, for much of the opening half-hour, kept Pirates from finding their rhythm.

Oswin Appollis and Yanela Mbuthuma both had early opportunities inside the opening five minutes, while Sbangani Zulu headed wide from a corner in the 25th minute.

Sekhukhune’s best opportunity came eight minutes later when Mpho Rammala tested the Pirates defence. It was as close as Babina Noko came to seriously threatening the aggregate score.

Then the game changed.

Pirates found another gear with half-time approaching, scoring twice in six minutes to take firm control of the tie.

Mbuthuma, who played a key creative role throughout the afternoon, cut inside from the left in the 36th minute before squaring the ball for Thapelo Mokobodi to finish from close range.

Six minutes later, Mbuthuma was involved again, this time releasing Gamphani Lungu, who worked the ball into the net to give Pirates a 2-0 lead at the break.

With a three-goal advantage on aggregate, the Buccaneers had effectively put one foot in the final.

Chaine and Zulu Shut the Door

Sekhukhune came out after the interval knowing that only a dramatic turnaround would keep their final hopes alive.

For a spell, Babina Noko applied sustained pressure around Sipho Chaine’s goal and looked capable of making the closing stages uncomfortable for Pirates.

Chaine responded when it mattered, producing an important save in the 55th minute.

Zulu then delivered another crucial defensive intervention in the 70th minute, denying Bright Ndlovu and helping Pirates preserve their advantage.

Those moments lacked the glamour of the goals, but they were just as important. Pirates’ ability to absorb pressure and remain organised ensured Sekhukhune never found the opening they needed to bring the tie back to life.

Substitutes Put the Tie Beyond Reach

The Pirates’ bench strength delivered the final blow.

Tshepang Moremi, introduced in the 74th minute for Appollis, combined with fellow substitute Kamogelo Sebelebele late in the match to create Pirates’ third goal of the afternoon.

That strike ended any realistic prospect of a Sekhukhune comeback and put the result beyond doubt.

The second-half changes also reflected Pirates’ depth. Chabatsane, Masilela, Padime and Radiopane were all brought on as the coaching staff managed the game and protected key players with the tie effectively settled.

That squad depth could prove increasingly important as Pirates navigate another demanding campaign.

Another Final, Another Piece of History

Reaching five consecutive MTN8 finals places Pirates in unprecedented territory.

The achievement is a testament not only to the club’s quality but also to its consistency in knockout football. Pirates have repeatedly found ways to navigate difficult ties, manage pressure, and close out games when it matters most.

Now they wait to discover their final opponent.

Mamelodi Sundowns host Lamontville Golden Arrows on Sunday in the other semifinal, with the winner set to face Pirates in the showpiece.

Whoever emerges, the Buccaneers will arrive in the final with another piece of history already secured.
