Sheppard Returns to Kaizer Chiefs First Team as Congested Fixture List Looms

JOHANNESBURG – Kaizer Chiefs have moved to reinforce their technical setup ahead of a demanding run of fixtures by recalling Dillon Sheppard from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) side to assist the first team.
The move comes as Amakhosi begin a hectic start to 2026, kicking off their campaign against Golden Arrows with five matches scheduled in just 14 days across multiple competitions.
Chiefs head coach Cedric Kaze confirmed on Monday that Sheppard, a former assistant coach with the senior team, has been brought back into the first-team environment to help manage player workload during a period marked by constant travel and limited recovery time.
Speaking at Naturena, Kaze said the decision followed extensive planning meetings involving the club’s medical team, strength and conditioning staff, and management.

“We’ve had several meetings with our medical staff, our head of strength and conditioning and management to work on every detail, especially travel,” Kaze explained. “In the next three weeks, we have trips to Zambia, Bloemfontein, Durban, and Polokwane to play Al Masry, and then Cape Town to face Stellenbosch on February 4. That’s five trips in 14 days.”
Kaze said the tight schedule has forced the club to carefully manage recovery, training loads and squad rotation, with some players expected to remain behind during certain trips.
“We have to organise recovery time, the way we travel, and even the players who stay behind,” he said. “Those players will have a very detailed programme. That’s why you’ve seen coach Dillon Sheppard working with the first team again. We want to work on every detail so that we come out of this period in a good and positive place.”

Chiefs are facing a particularly intense stretch, juggling back-to-back fixtures in the Betway Premiership, the CAF Confederation Cup, and the Nedbank Cup, which they are defending.
Sheppard’s return is expected to provide continuity and additional technical support, especially for players not involved in every match, as Chiefs attempt to balance performance with player welfare during one of the busiest phases of their season.
