Soweto Derby Returns to Ellis Park

JOHANNESBURG – The Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will return to Ellis Park Stadium for the first time in more than two decades, marking a deeply symbolic moment in South African football history.

The iconic venue last hosted the fierce rivalry in April 2001, on a day overshadowed by tragedy when supporters lost their lives. On 7 February 2025, however, Ellis Park will reopen its gates to the derby in a different spirit, as former stars of both clubs take to the field in a Legends Soweto Derby.

The match, organised by Puzzle Pictures, is designed to honour the players who built one of Africa’s greatest football rivalries and to celebrate the enduring cultural power of the derby, regardless of the level at which it is played.

Speaking at the launch of the event during a press conference at Ellis Park on Monday, Puzzle Pictures representative Khama Modise said it was a privilege to reunite the two Soweto giants on such historic ground.

“It has been carefully planned and organised by Puzzle Pictures, and we are excited to confirm that tickets are now officially on sale through TicketPro and all TicketPro outlets, including Spar nationwide,” Modise said.

“We are honoured to be joined by representatives of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, two institutions that have shaped the soul of our game. Most importantly, we are privileged to welcome the legends themselves – the men who built this historic rivalry, inspired generations and carried South African football on their shoulders.”

Modise said the Legends Derby was created not only as a match, but as a celebration of how far the local game has come.

“This event is about legacy, respect and unity through football,” he said. “What better way to honour that journey than by bringing the legends back onto the pitch where so many unforgettable memories were made.”

Adding an extra layer of intrigue, Modise revealed that the winning team will earn the right to face an International XI in a match scheduled for April.

“We saw this as the perfect way to kick things off,” he said. “The winner between the two teams will get the chance to play against an international selection later this year. You can already see how ready and fit the players are – it’s incredible how they continue to train. We’re really looking forward to it, and we know the fans are too.”

Supporters attending the launch were treated to the presence of several former stars. Orlando Pirates legends in attendance included Ronnie Zondi, Lucky Lekgwathi, Benson Mhlongo, Mpho Makola, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Oupa Manyisa, Happy Jele, Katlego Mashego, and Sifiso Myeni. Kaizer Chiefs were represented by Morgan Gould and Thuso Phala.

Organisers have called on fans to turn out in large numbers and embrace the occasion in the spirit of remembrance and celebration.

“These are games you don’t want to miss,” Modise said. “Come with your friends, your hearts and your humble spirit.”
