Sundowns Condemn Supporter Behaviour, Promise Legal Action

The response comes after a video circulated widely on social media showing a supporter throwing water at Berg as he was leaving the stadium

JOHANNESBURG – Mamelodi Sundowns have broken their silence following a disturbing incident involving sporting director Flemming Berg, confirming that the club will pursue legal action to identify and deal with those responsible.

The response comes after a video circulated widely on social media showing a supporter throwing water at Berg as he was leaving the stadium following Sundowns’ 2–2 draw against Sudanese side Al Hilal last Friday.

In a strongly worded statement, the club made it clear that it will not tolerate any form of intimidation, threats or misconduct directed at members of its technical team.

Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match,” the statement read.

“Sundowns has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy.”

The club stressed that while passionate support is part of football culture, it must never cross into abuse or unlawful behaviour. Sundowns confirmed that appropriate legal or disciplinary steps will be taken against those found to have acted illegally or in violation of the club’s supporter policies.

Sundowns also appealed for unity at a critical stage of the season, with the team still competing on multiple fronts.

“The players and technical team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focused on retaining the league title and competing successfully in all cup competitions,” the club said. “This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters.”

The incident has sparked debate among fans, with many calling for accountability while urging fellow supporters to uphold the values and standards of one of South Africa’s most successful football clubs.
