DURBAN, South Africa: Mamelodi Sundowns ended Orlando Pirates’ four-year hold on the MTN8 trophy with a 2-0 victory at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, as Ronwen Williams’ penalty save proved decisive in a final that remained in the balance until stoppage time.

Teboho Mokoena put Sundowns ahead in the 11th minute before Iqraam Rayners converted a late penalty to secure the trophy. Between those goals, Williams denied Gamphani Lungu from the spot when Pirates had their clearest opportunity to draw level.

The 10 October result denied Pirates an unprecedented fifth consecutive title and, according to the club’s match report, ended their unbeaten start to the season.

For the Buccaneers, the defeat came down to opportunities missed at one end and defensive errors punished at the other. Sundowns survived their opponents’ second-half pressure before the late penalty settled the contest.

Early Promise Gives Way To Sundowns Lead

Pirates started brightly, dominating possession in the opening exchanges. However, their early attacking intent produced little that seriously troubled Williams, with Lungu and Yanela Mbuthuma sending efforts wide.

Sundowns took advantage when Pirates failed to clear a set piece. Mokoena reacted inside the penalty area and finished from close range, forcing the defending champions to chase the game.

The goal unsettled Pirates, whose mistakes gave Sundowns chances to extend their lead. Malibongwe Khoza and Thapelo Morena went close, while goalkeeper Sipho Chaine made important saves to deny Brayan León and Nuno Santos.

Chaine’s interventions kept Pirates within reach. Although they recovered some attacking momentum before half-time, they could not turn that spell into an equaliser.

Their difficulties were compounded when Kamohelo Sebelebele was stretchered off following a challenge by Khulumani Ndamane. Oswin Appollis replaced him at the start of the second half.

Williams Wins The Crucial Penalty Duel

Pirates’ best chance to change the course of the final arrived just before the hour mark, when Mokoena was penalised for a foul on Mbuthuma inside the box.

Lungu stepped forward with the opportunity to cancel out Sundowns’ lead. Williams dived low to his left and stopped the penalty, preserving his side’s advantage. The PSL’s match report recorded the penalty award in the 59th minute.

Pirates continued to push forward after the setback. Thalente Mbatha went narrowly wide from close range, while Williams produced another important save to keep out Deon Hotto.

The contest remained open because Sundowns also failed to finish promising attacks. León had an opportunity to put the match beyond Pirates after a swift counterattack but could not beat Chaine.

That left the Buccaneers with a route back into the game, although each missed chance reduced the time available to take it.

Late Penalty Ends Pirates’ Comeback Hopes

Pirates introduced fresh attacking options, including Evidence Makgopa and Simphiwe Masilela, as they searched for an equaliser.

Masilela threatened late on with a run through the middle, but the breakthrough never came.

Instead, Sundowns were awarded a penalty in stoppage time following a challenge by Thapelo Mokobodi on Siyanda Ndlovu.

Pirates’ own match report questioned the decision, describing the penalty as “soft”. That was the club’s assessment of the incident.

Rayners converted to make it 2-0, ending the prospect of a late Pirates recovery. The official scoreline recorded his goal in the fourth minute of added time.

Four-Year Hold On The Trophy Ends

The final illustrated how a handful of moments can decide a closely contested cup match: Pirates failed to clear the danger before the opener, Williams saved their penalty, and Rayners converted Sundowns’ late opportunity.

Pirates created enough chances to remain competitive, but their inability to finish left them chasing an early deficit throughout the evening.

For Sundowns, the victory delivered the MTN8 trophy and ended their rivals’ run of four consecutive titles. For Pirates, a campaign aimed at extending that record ended one match short.
