CAF Conducts Final Inspections for CHAN 2024 as Kenya Faces Political Unrest

With the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 just weeks away, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has kicked off its final series of host nation inspections and readiness workshops across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

This crucial phase comes at a pivotal time for Kenya, as the country grapples with ongoing political unrest, raising questions about security and organisational stability ahead of the continental football showcase.

The CAF delegation began its inspections on Friday, 4 July, at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani. The stadium, now boasting a 50,000-seat capacity after recent refurbishments, is set to host Group A matches and the tournament final on 30 August 2025.

The following day, CAF officials visited the Nyayo Stadium, concluding their Nairobi assessments before moving on to other host cities, including Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Kampala (Uganda), and Zanzibar.

Prior to stadium visits, CAF led comprehensive workshops with Kenya’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), addressing:

Broadcasting and media operations
Safety and security protocols
Logistics and transport services
Team accommodation and support

Nicholas Musonye, Chairman of Kenya’s LOC, emphasized the relentless efforts made to meet CAF’s requirements. “We have been working tirelessly, day and night, to ensure everything is on track as we approach the tournament. The LOC has collaborated closely with CAF to adhere to the provided guidelines and timelines. We are also grateful to the Government for its support, especially in terms of timely financing and approvals,” Musonye stated.

Government Commitment Amid Unrest

Despite the ongoing political tensions and protests that have swept through Kenya in recent months, the government has reiterated its full support for CHAN 2024. Speaking on behalf of Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, Mr. Evans Achoki, Secretary of Administration at the Ministry of Sports, assured stakeholders of seamless coordination and robust backing: “Our goal is to deliver an unforgettable CHAN tournament, one that Africa and the world will remember. Kenya is ready.”

CAF’s inspection team has placed particular emphasis on evaluating security arrangements at all venues and accommodation sites.

Following Nairobi, CAF’s inspection team will continue its mission across other East African host cities. Workshops and site visits in Dar es Salaam, Kampala, and Zanzibar will focus on finalizing logistics, security, and operational readiness. The confederation is expected to provide final recommendations for any remaining enhancements after these visits.

While Kenya’s preparations for CHAN 2024 have been robust and well-coordinated, the backdrop of political unrest remains a critical factor.
