KATSINA, Nigeria — Nigerian football is mourning the sudden death of 27-year-old professional footballer Chinedu Ozor, who collapsed during a pre-season match between Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes in Katsina State.

Ozor, who had recently joined Katsina United, suffered the medical emergency about nine minutes into the match at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Tuesday, 11 August.

Medical personnel at the stadium rushed to assist him before he was taken to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Gidan Dawa, where doctors pronounced him dead. Katsina United later said his death was confirmed at Katsina General Hospital.

The tragedy was followed by confusion and a brief wave of hope after reports emerged that Ozor had shown signs of movement after initially being taken away from the stadium.

His family, believing he might still be alive, requested another medical assessment. He was subsequently taken to the intensive-care unit at Katsina General Hospital.

The reports sparked hope among supporters and members of the football community that the young player may have survived.

Katsina United, however, later dismissed the reports, saying Ozor had not regained consciousness.

The club said the family’s decision to seek further medical attention reflected their desperate hope that their loved one could still be saved, but confirmed that he had died.

Ozor’s childhood friend, Jerome Ochigbo, also confirmed that there had been no recovery while the player was in intensive care.

Following further medical assessment, Ozor’s body was returned to the morgue.

A career cut short

Ozor had built a career in Nigerian domestic football and had represented clubs including Heartland and Kano Pillars before joining Katsina United ahead of the new Nigeria Premier Football League season.

His arrival at Katsina United was part of the club’s preparations for the new campaign. His sudden death has therefore come as a devastating blow to his new teammates, former clubs, friends and supporters.

Instead of beginning preparations for the new season with his teammates, his family is now preparing to return his body to Benue State.

Cause of death remains unclear

There is currently no publicly confirmed medical report establishing the precise cause of Ozor’s death.

What is known is that he suddenly collapsed during the match and required immediate medical attention before being transported to the hospital.

Claims circulating on social media have linked his death to heart failure and other medical conditions. However, none of these claims has been confirmed by an official medical report released by the club or relevant authorities.

The circumstances surrounding his collapse, and the subsequent reports that he may have shown signs of life after being pronounced dead, have added to the shock surrounding the tragedy.

Nigerian football mourns

Ozor’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nigerian football, with clubs, players and supporters expressing condolences to his family and teammates.

Katsina United described the death as a tragedy and called for prayers and support for his loved ones.

The incident has also renewed attention on the importance of medical preparedness and emergency response at football matches.

Sudden cardiac or other medical emergencies on the pitch can become life-threatening within minutes, making trained medical personnel, appropriate emergency equipment and rapid access to hospital care critical during professional matches.

For Ozor’s family, teammates and friends, however, the immediate focus is on mourning a young footballer whose career was still taking shape.

His final moments on the football pitch have left Nigerian football with a painful reminder of how quickly a promising career and a young life can be cut short.
