R3.8m Tobacco Haul: Accused Remanded In Custody

LIMPOPO — Zimbabwean national Shumba Munetsi, 45, has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Phalala Magistrate’s Court in connection with the alleged smuggling of manufactured tobacco worth approximately R3.8m through the Groblersbrug Port of Entry.

Munetsi appeared in court on Wednesday, 26 August, where the matter was postponed to Monday, 31 August 2026, for a formal bail application.

Munetsi is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He remains in custody pending his formal bail application.

The court development follows his arrest by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing team at Groblersbrug on Monday.

Authorities allege that Munetsi was driving a Volvo truck towing an LP gas trailer when officers stopped the vehicle at approximately 18:42 as it attempted to enter South Africa.

The trailer initially raised no immediate alarm, with the driver allegedly telling police that it was carrying gas.

However, officers became suspicious after discovering a large concealed hatch underneath the trailer. 

According to police, the driver allegedly admitted that the trailer was not carrying gas as initially indicated, but was being used to conceal and transport tobacco products.

When the hidden compartment was opened, officers allegedly discovered 521 plastic bags containing approximately 7 294 kilograms of suspected manufactured tobacco.

The tobacco is estimated to have a street value of approximately R3.8m.

The Volvo truck and LP gas trailer were also seized, with their combined estimated value put at approximately R1.8m.

INVESTIGATION WIDENS

The investigation is continuing as police seek to establish the origin and intended destination of the suspected illicit tobacco, while also determining whether other people are linked to the alleged smuggling operation.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers praised the Border Policing members for their vigilance in uncovering the concealed consignment.

He said SAPS would continue intensifying operations at ports of entry and other strategic points to disrupt the smuggling of illicit goods and protect South Africa’s economy from organised criminal activity.
