Lamine Yamal Inherits Barcelona’s Iconic Number 10 Jersey After Breakthrough Season

Barcelona’s electric 18-year-old winger, Lamine Yamal, has been officially handed the prestigious number 10 shirt, previously worn by club legend Lionel Messi, marking a major milestone in the teenager’s rapidly ascending career.
The announcement comes ahead of the 2025-26 season following a remarkable breakthrough campaign for Yamal, cementing his status as one of football’s brightest young talents.
Last season, Yamal donned the number 19 jersey and made an unforgettable impact by scoring 18 goals and providing 25 assists. His contributions helped Barcelona sweep the LaLiga title, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup—completing a domestic treble—while also reaching the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
Having risen through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy since childhood, Yamal had already committed his long-term future to the club, signing a contract extension in May 2025 that keeps him at Camp Nou until 2031.
Passing the Torch
Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, presented Yamal with the iconic number 10 shirt during a special ceremony at the club. The number carries enormous symbolic weight at Barcelona, worn by some of football’s greatest names, including Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and of course, Lionel Messi.
Messi, who departed the club after the 2020-21 season due to financial constraints, scored a record 672 goals for Barcelona, winning 34 trophies and becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer. After Messi’s exit, the number 10 shirt was worn by promising winger Ansu Fati before he was loaned out to AS Monaco.

Yamal is conscious of the legendary legacy he now inherits, but remains determined to make the shirt his own.
“Messi paved the way with the number 10, I will make mine,” Yamal told reporters. “Messi, Maradona, and Ronaldinho are club legends. Every kid dreams of wearing that number. I’m grateful to the club and ready to carry on that legacy.”
A Future Full of Ambition
Having already won the European Championship with Spain in 2024, Yamal has set his sights on even loftier goals.
“I haven’t won the Champions League or the World Cup yet. Those are my next dreams and challenges,” the young winger said.

Yamal’s new contract reportedly includes a staggering €1 billion release clause, underscoring Barcelona’s confidence in his immense potential and signaling their intent to build the team around him in the coming years.
Official club statements and kit launches confirmed that Yamal’s jersey will be available for fans starting the 2025-26 season, cementing his role as a central figure in Barcelona’s future.
A New Era at Camp Nou

The transition of the number 10 shirt to Yamal marks a symbolic passing of the torch for Barcelona’s next generation. As the club looks to reclaim glory at the domestic and European levels, the appointment of a young homegrown star to this iconic number embodies both the club’s heritage and bright future.
With his blend of electric pace, skilful dribbling, and creative flair, Lamine Yamal stands poised to write a new chapter in the annals of Barcelona and football history.
